From Queens to Kings

Happy Monday! We hope your weekend was fun! We had to catch up on work, and get our new bed set up, so it was good in a dorky way, not in a fun way. Hopefully in the next week I can get out of bed a bit more and start enjoying this pregnancy! iTunes and me have become besties and I just keep renting and renting movies to keep me sane. Speaking of keeping sane, our Queen mattress on a King frame situation is officially over. I feel very much less white trash this week than I did last week. Buy-buy frumpy looking sad situation!

Joey (my hero), did most of the setting up because I am basically useless right now. He cleared off the old Queen mattress (there was no box spring) and left the bed looking like the day we finished building it.

Our bedinabox.com bed showed up in a kinda uneventful looking way. The big white poof is the mattress and the box next to it is there version of a boxspring. I am not going to lie – I was feeling a little ripped off.

Joey got to work on the boxspring, which was an additional $350 for the King. It took him about a half hour to fully assemble. The picture above is flipped up-side-down. The reason we opted for their boxspring thing is because I was scared the mattress would eventually sag through our DIY bedframe’s slots.

This is what the boxspring looks like covered in the provided fabric. Starting to look like a bed! Eh, eh? Now I know the most interesting part of this whole bedinabox.com purchase is how that white bag turns into a full blown King mattress you actually want to sleep on. Well, photos don’t tell the story – so we made a little video to give you the full experience. Hold tight, we will post soon!

pacbamboo, bedinabox.com, bedinabox, tall bed, diy bed, tufted headboard, orla kiely,

And here is what we have! A SUPER tall bed (I am going to need to get some steps to get in and out of this thing!) It’s a 8″ boxspring and a 13″ mattress on top of the bed frame. Yep. All 5’2 of me is basically in standing position when my feel slide to the floor. Not good for nausea.

So here is the full break down of the Pro’s:

  • Totally easy set up
  • Not too much waste (boxes, plastic, bags, etc..)
  • Don’t really need tools
  • We saved over $1,000 (!!!) compared to identical mattresses
  • It’s so cozy and amazing feeling
  • Quick shipping
  • Much higher quality than we expected

And with the good, comes the bad (not too much bad):

  • I was panicing when we put the mattress on the bed because it looked lumpy and uneven for a good 45 minutes. It evened out – I just wish we had warning to expect that.
  • There was this kinda chemical/foam smell that’s pretty strong and the first night I got a headache. Night two it faded a bit.
  • This is more our fault than anyone else – the bed is TALL! It’s a long way down, don’t fall!

All that’s left to do now is get a duvet and blankets that actually fit the bed properly. I want know about your mattress! We have been mattress obsessed for over a year now, hunting and researching like nutty people on the hunt for the perfect one. It’s a wonder we wound up ordering one online before even testing it.  Anyone else out there do that?

I’ve been considering getting a stepstool to put next to my bed- I have a ::low:: frame and it still feels like i have to pole vault into it! How do your pups like the new bed? Do they need a stepstool too? And one more question… are those POCKETS in the “wings” of your headboard? Because that’d be genius.

    • Joey & Lana says:

hey linz! the pups have been sleeping downstairs for months, i can’t handle their smell. it’s been painful mentally. as for the pocket, why yes. thanks for noticing. we built the bed….to my specifications. panic button built in, computer pocket, and all.

The finished product looks so chic, it will be totally worth having to climb steps to get in/out. =)

Our king mattress was way too high with a box spring too, so we returned it and got two twin bunkie boards (thin boards meant for bunk beds) Works like a charm and cheaper than the box spring. Plus I can actually get in our bed! :) . FYI in case you decide the bed is really too high.

    Hello:
I was searching for a headboard and came across your site. Did you build that yourself? Where can i get info on the headboard? Your bed looks beautiful!!!!

    • Joey & Lana says:

thanks for stopping by! we did build it from wood at the lumber yard and them upholstered it. thanks for the kind words!

If the bed is too high and you made the frame, why don’t you adjust the frame to make the box spring lower in there? Since you’ve had the bed for a while now, how do you like it? Does it get saggy? Does it still smell? Thanks!

    • Lana Katsaros says:

hi joy! the bed has been holding strong! we both love it and it has not sagged and that smell went away and stayed away after a few nights – maybe a week. i would say we would suggest it to a friend so far – hopefully it holds up like the expensive ones!
